Valentine's Day is the second most popular holiday for exchanging cards, with approximately 145 million exchanged annually in the USA, not counting those in classrooms. In the UK, nearly 21 million Valentine's Day cards were purchased in 2023. 

The tradition began in 17th-century England, and by the 19th century, Valentine's Writer booklets offered sample love messages. Esther Howland was the first American publisher of Valentine's Day cards in the 1840s.
